In theory, autumn is a great season for fashion, but let’s face it, it’s also kind of terrible because you can never figure out quite what to wear so you’re actually comfortable.
A down coat feels too heavy, but a thin sweater won’t cut it and you’ll be sweating by 2pm anyway. When it comes to the best fall jackets and coats, we prefer sherpas, denim, light puffers, and shackets. No, we didn’t make that last one up.
Fall Jackets and Coats for the Most Confusing Season

8. Free People Velvet Military Jacket in Disco Indigo, $178
Look like your high school’s drum major, but cooler, in this velvet military jacket from Free People. No, we’re not bitter at all that we didn’t make the cut.

Pick up one of the PacSun’s oversized blue flannel shirt-jacket and pair it with some Doc Martens for the ultimate 90s-era look.
10. Athleta Whisper Featherless Jacket in Cattail Brown, $199
Our favorite puffer jacket from Athleta comes in plus sizes up to 3x. Plus they’re featherless, so you don’t have to worry about flying away.
11. Anthropologie Plaid Capelet in Lilac, $140
A capelet is a mix between a cape, a shawl, and a blanket. This one from Anthropologie has a touch of wool for extra coziness and is great for late night rendezvous.
