A change of the seasons means one thing – a change for our nails. This autumn is the season we finally stop biting them! And when we embrace the fall nail trends of 2022.
Classic autumn-colored nail polish shades will always be a choice, but sometimes the most popular trends don’t necessarily scream “fall.” It’s a bit more of a whisper.
Throughout the year, nail artists have seen a variety of styles go viral, from Hailey Bieber’s glazed donut nails to metallics and chromes to a newfound fondness for press-on nails.
In addition to these viral trends, we’re also seeing nail art ideas with gold details, variations on the classic French manicure, and ’90s-era grunge neutrals. So pick out your favorite look to gear up for sweater vibes and spooky weather. We said what we said.
All of these fall nail ideas can be done at home with the help of some nail polish, a few inexpensive tools. And, a House of the Dragon marathon.
Fall Nail Trends for 2022
1. Ruby Red Nails
Vibrant red nails are always a classic, but they’re especially “in” for fall. And Valentine’s Day. And Christmas.
Anyway, an orangey red makes a great fall nail color as you transition from your summer to autumn nail look. This Essie shade in Clambake may not sound appetizing, but luckily, you’re not eating it.
2. French Manicures
French tips work on a variety of nail shapes and lengths, so it’s no surprise that this ’90s favorite continues to thrive.
But instead of just the classic white tips, spice things up with matte nails and a glossy tip, metallic tips, or a moodier tip for fall. Be warned: we hear dark blues can be a bit grumpy at times.
3. Cosmic Designs
All things celestial and cosmic will be trending this fall. Think anything from witchy crescent moons and stars to out-of-this-world looks. We always did think Gobstoppers looked like outer space.
4. Glazed Nail Trends
Glazed nails, also known as Hailey Bieber nails, are shimmery and iridescent. It’s low-key elegant and pairs really well with cake donuts. What? You thought we were going to say glazed?
To DIY this trend, use Expressie FX in Iced Out. Or, if you’re at the salon, ask your artist for a sheer polish with chrome dip powder on top, as directed by Bieber’s nail artist Zola. Look at us – we’re just like celebs!
5. Barbiecore Nails
Normally, hot pink is reserved for summer. But the upcoming Barbie movie has people grabbing anything and everything they can find in the bold signature hue. It’s how we ended up with so much Pepto Bismol.
6. Chrome Nails
Chrome nails, whether gold, silver, or more colorful shades, are expected to be a big hit this fall. This nail art design can take shape via simple one-color manis, 3D chrome orbs, or molten-like designs reminiscent of The Terminator.
Philosophically, we’d say this has to do with trends in virtual reality, anything futuristic, and cosmic vibes. Realistically, we’d say it has to do with our Instagram feeds.
7. Almond-Shaped Nails
The almond nail shape is a top contender for fall for those who prefer shorter nails. By shorter, we mean anything that doesn’t require us to have a constant companion to help us with all things.
This shape looks great with a variety designs, but why not do something extra like this French manicure variation with foil and fall shades. Because when we do a trend, we do a trend. Speaking of, can we interest you in some boozy pickles? We’ve got some…extra.
8. Foil Finishes
Adding foil over any base color is a fun way to add some pizzazz to a regular manicure. If you’ve been trying to make friends with the murder of crows in your yard, this will put you on the fast track.
9. Nail Stickers
As the re-emergence of Y2K fashion continues, nail stickers are here to make our nails look great and our lives easier. The ’90s truly were simpler times. Minus that mind-numbing Internet dial-up tone.
10. Goth Flowers
For fall, put a dark twist on florals for a refreshing change. Bonus – it’s no big deal if you forget to water these ones.
11. Mustard Nails
Burnt orange is out, and mustard is in. This underrated tone looks great on every skin tone and really gives off Children of the Corn vibes, so it’s perfect for spooky time. OPI’s Ochre to the Moon is a great option.
