Nothing says Halloween is here like the first Hocus Pocus viewing of the year (April, in our case). Whether you’ve been watching the cult classic over and over since 1993 or just now jumping on the vacuum wagon, it’s time to break out your best Hocus Pocus costume from the dusty trunk it’s been trapped in for centuries.
Celebrate the season of the Salem witches (and the release of Hocus Pocus 2 on September 30th) by planning a group costume with your two besties and dress up as the three Sanderson sisters. Or, ride your broom solo as Dani or undead Billy.
You can also choose to go the DIY cosplay route or pick up a ready-to-buy costumes from Amazon or Spirit Halloween, no spell book required! That thing is always running off or getting some shut eye anyway. Totally unreliable.
DIY Hocus Pocus Costume Ideas for Halloween
Figuring out which friend of the group gets to dress up as Winifred, Sarah, or Mary is bound to be an interesting decision. Each witch possesses a uniquely different look, skill set, and – we’ll just say it – intelligence level.
We recommend a rousing game of roshambo or a trip to the Thunderdome to sort this out.
1. Winifred Sanderson Costume
The eldest witch, Winifred (Bette Midler), is the trio’s smartest and the mastermind of their evil plans. How very first child of her.
Winifred Sanderson costumes consist of an emerald, purple, and gold gown, a matching emerald cape, and Winnie’s iconic orange curls. You’ll be casting spells in no time. Accio coffee!
If you want to go all out, put on some red lipstick and pink blush, put in your fake teeth, and shave off your eyebrows. All the cool kids are doing it.
What to Wear:
- Winifred Sanderson Dress
- Winifred Sanderson Wig
- Emerald Cape
- Witch Shoes
- Green and Black Stockings
- Fake Teeth
- Winifred Sanderson Necklace
- Winifred Sanderson Earrings
- Clear Stiletto Press-On Nails
- The Boooooooooook!
2. Mary Sanderson Costume
If you’ve realized you most relate to Kathy Najimy’s Mary (motivated by food and nail-biting your way through life), it’s time to represent the sister with the best hair.
She may not be the brightest of the bunch, but she has a knack for sniffing out children. Which is great for when you lose one of them in the grocery store again.
Her look can be recreated with a flowy long-sleeve orange top, red corset, and long patchwork skirt. Just don’t forget her signature crooked smile and twisted tower of black and purple-streaked hair.
What to Wear:
3. Sarah Sanderson Costume
Dressing up as Sarah Jessica Parker’s Sarah Sanderson is perfect for you if your inner witch and flirtatious princess keep competing for the spotlight. We know ours do, and our wardrobe is starting to get very confusing. It’s worse than dealing with those two wolves.
To recreate her look, you’ll need a pink corset with red lacy sleeves and a sheer long red and purple skirt.
What to Wear:
4. Billy Butcherson
Billy “the Butcher” Butcherson is Winifred’s ex-lover who has risen from the dead. And not because Mercury is in reverse cowgirl again.
To portray the unexpected hero, you’ll need a black double-breasted coat, a frilly white shirt, and other colonial-era fashion – black pants eerily similar to capris, white stockings, and some snazzy buckle shoes. If your head is detachable, even better!
Then proceed to make sure everything looks like it’s been underground since the 17th century. Pro tip – bury everything in your backyard, figure out how to do the make-up, and dig up the clothes.
What to Wear:
5. Dani Dennison Costume
Though Dani is not as popular as the Sanderson sisters, she’s a fun one to dress up as for Halloween. While there are ready-to-buy versions for kids, you may have to do some witchcraft to get this look as an adult.
By witchcraft, we mean follow the exact instructions in Danica Ybanez’s TikTok. Your athame can’t help you with this one.
What to Wear:
- Red ¾ Sleeve Shirt
- Black Turtleneck
- Black Skater Skirt
- Antique Silver Charms
- Silver Saturn Necklace
- Witch Hat
- Black Tulle
- Halloween Pom Poms
- Orange Bias Tape
- Red Watch
- Red Leggings
- Combat Boots
- >Fringe Scarf
6. Max Dennison Costume
Max Dennison may think he’s too cool for Salem’s Halloween enthusiasm. That’s quickly squashed the moment he lights the Black Flame Candle, and everything happens exactly how he was told it would happen.
Max is ready to be your muse if you need a last-minute costume. Throw on some jeans, a light grey tee, a long-sleeve blue sweatshirt, and an olive bomber jacket.
Layers save lives. And so does not lighting the Black Flame Candle. Multiple lessons have been learned here.
What to Wear:
7. Allison Watts Costume
Salem local and Max’s newfound love interest is another easy costume to pull off. Allison’s look is essentially every PSL lover’s fall outfit inspiration.
Just head to the thrift store and pick up a ¾ sleeve white ribbed shirt, an oversized beige cardigan, a gold locket, light-colored jeans, and some brown boots. Or tackle a basic b and steal her look.
